Advancing Knowledge Through Multidisciplinary Research and Innovation
Trauma remains a significant public health concern, with many individuals experiencing events such as accidents, abuse, neglect, or community violence that can have lasting psychological effects. These experiences often contribute to conditions including anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. As a result, mental health practitioners are increasingly challenged to provide care that goes beyond symptom management to address the deeper impact of trauma on emotional and cognitive functioning.
Trauma-informed care (TIC) offers a comprehensive framework that recognizes the pervasive influence of trauma on individuals’ lives. Emphasizing principles such as safety, trust, empowerment, and cultural sensitivity, TIC shifts the focus from “what is wrong” to “what has happened.” This approach enables more effective therapeutic engagement and supports improved outcomes in mental health counselling.
